So, supposedly we are expecting a $100 million payout for next week’s lottery – the highest ever in Australian history. My colleagues and I were all talking and thinking about this when we read the news. And of course, the main thing we all talked about was: “what would you do with $100 million dollars?”

At first I thought to myself, that’s a whole lot of money! Like, seriously, a whole lot of money!!! I mean, in my head, I guess I was still thinking that I would do exactly the same thing as I do now, eat the same stuff I eat now, buy the same things I buy now, etc. And in my head, there’d only be minimal upscaling in my life, like so:

  1. I will not buy items from Cotton On & Jay Jays only when they are on sale.
  2. I will probably not have too many items in my new penthouse from Ikea.
  3. I will not go to eBay as often as I do now, as I can just buy things off the shelves.
  4. I will probably eat at Nobu more than once a year (I don’t really like most expensive food anyways, just wagyu.)
  5. I will not hesitate buying the new Apple gadgets or a new laptop when mine’s a little broken.

Sounds like I don’t actually need the $100 million dollars right? But then, my colleagues got me into thinking about so much more. I mean, of course, I was already thinking of getting my awesome dream home, that is: an apartment in the middle of the city. But, no, there’s so much more, so much more you can have if you have $100 million. If you are greedy enough to dream.

You can buy more than just your dream home. You can afford, say, a castle or an island or an apartment in mid-Manhattan NYC! Now how cool is that?! Or, you don’t need to have your own place elsewhere in the world, but you can still choose to stay in luxury 5 star hotels everywhere you go. Every single time. Yes. The luxury of things. The luxury of being able to do things. The luxury of being able to buy things.

So, here’s my break down of spending:

  1. Give 10% to my church’s building fund and another 10% as tithing. Left: $80,000,000
  2. A penthouse in the middle of Melbourne CBD with awesome furniture. Left: $70,000,000
  3. A couple of millions for close family. Left: $50,000,000
  4. A couple of millions for closest friends. Left: $40,000,000
  5. That house elsewhere, that island, that ship, that private jet, that whatever you want.
  6. Invest some and save the rest in the bank somewhere and just live off the interest forever!
For the rest of my life, I can probably also afford:
  1. Cleaner that comes in every week or so to clean my house.
  2. Personal masseuse / hairdresser (one of those Indonesian ones who seem to do both very well.)
  3. A driver (and a car) so that I don’t always have to hassle Jax to drive me to places or pick me up!
  4. Not working 9 to 5 again, ever.

See, that very last point… Would you quit our job straight after receiving the lump sum? Like, d’oh! Almost a no brainer when you are $100,000,000 richer. Wouldn’t you?

But it doesn’t mean I will just do nothing all day and bludge. Neither does that mean that I will just party all night and travel for the rest of my life. I still want to do stuff, things I’m passionate about, things that I’d never get to do because I might not have enough money to live, things that used to be an issue because of money but is now as easy as “let’s do it!” Oh I can think of so many things I’d rather do…

My goodness, $100,000,000 is way too much money!

So what will you do if you win $100,000,000? And, will you be buying next week’s lottery ticket?
